The United Nations Environment Programme, also known as UNEP, is a global organization that works to protect our environment and help people live better lives without harming the planet. Based in Nairobi, Kenya, UNEP is the only major United Nations headquarters located in Africa, making it a special place where important decisions about our Earth are made. What Does UNEP Do? Imagine having a friend who watches over the health of our entire planet – that's what UNEP does! Started in 1972 after a big meeting in Stockholm, Sweden, UNEP helps countries work together to solve environmental problems that affect us all. Think about when you get sick – your whole body feels it, not just one part. Similarly, when our environment suffers from pollution, climate change, or when animals and plants start disappearing, it affects everyone around the world. UNEP helps find solutions to these big problems. Why Kenya is Proud to Host UNEP Having UNEP's headquarters in Nairobi is very special. UNEP's Leadership UNEP is currently led by Executive Director Inger Andersen, who was appointed in February 2019. Before her, the organization was led by many dedicated people including its first director, Maurice Strong, and Mostafa Kamal Tolba, who led UNEP for 17 years and helped create the Montreal Protocol. These leaders work with a team of scientists, policy experts, and environmental specialists from around the world, including many Kenyans who bring their knowledge and experience to help solve global environmental challenges. How UNEP is Funded UNEP relies on voluntary contributions from UN member states. This means countries choose to give money to support UNEP's work. In 2015, UNEP partnered with the European Investment Bank to create the Renewable Energy Performance Platform (REPP), which has invested around $45 million in renewable energy projects in 13 African countries.
